TJ’s flight pattern had taken longer than anticipated. High winds forced her to change her route several times, and she’d been just a little distracted.

She hadn’t been ready to talk to Trace this morning for more than one reason. Delving into the past was difficult, but the present was even more pressing. She tried not to show it, but his story about his troubles with his father affected her more than she cared to admit. That made her angry because she didn’t need one more reason to care about Trace Leyton. That “push me, pull me” feeling he always created in her didn’t need any more shoves. One more just might put her over the edge—though of what, she didn’t know.

The truth was, she was afraid. It was that simple. She’d been half in love with Trace all her life...and she’d fought those feelings just as long. If she stopped blaming him, if she really forgot the past and started working with him, would she lose her heart completely?

Gomez’s words echoed in her mind. Lives were at stake. Not just hers, but those of her mom, Squirt, Missy and her son as well. She had to put her fears and anger aside long enough to work with Trace. But that “almost kiss” last night had made that more difficult than ever.

She’d been praying all morning and still had no solution. Why couldn’t she put the past behind her and move on? It seemed everyone else had—Missy, Trace, maybe even Chad. But she was stuck in the same mode.

It seemed she’d been angry all her life. Angry that she lost her father. Angry that PTSD caused her grandfather to drink. Angry that Trace hadn’t cared for her the way she had cared for him.

But now he was showing signs of caring—a grown-up kind of caring—and she couldn’t let go of her anger long enough to see where that might lead. She was too afraid it might happen again, and her walls of anger were so thick, no one could break through them anyway.

The Lord had been putting the word forgiveness in her path. She knew it meant something. She was supposed to listen. She thought she might even have to forgive, but saying the word and doing it were two separate things. She simply didn’t know how.

Today, no matter how hard she tried, no answers came to her. She tried to concentrate on the job at hand, but she’d been so busy thinking, she’d missed several facilities and had to go back and recheck.

Every building she flew over was empty. She found no signs of the gang or any activity, but she finished the northern section completely. She headed home, weary but certain she’d done all she could.

It was late in the afternoon when she finally returned to the ranch. She’d told Trace she hadn’t had much sleep, and that was the truth. She landed and stepped out of her helicopter on legs that were wobbly. Her lack of sleep, hours of flying and her mental battles had taken their toll.
